Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Batch A124, the first of three batches slated for 2024, is the youngest and second least potent batch released to date. Despite its lower age and proof, it delivers a robust and delightful flavor, demonstrating that these factors do not necessarily result in an inferior pour.

The coding of “A124” signifies the first batch (“A”) of the year, released in January (“1”), in the year 2024 (“24”). Previously, most batches carried a standard 12-year age statement, although it’s plausible that some barrels in the blends were older. However, Heaven Hill decided to replace this standard 12-year age statement with a variable age statement by batch, which could be more or less than 12 years. This change was evident in their third batch of 2023, where they released their oldest batch to date, a bourbon aged 13 years and 7 months, which was so exceptional that it was crowned our #1 Whiskey of 2023.

The decision by Heaven Hill to broaden the age range for Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is not unexpected. This move allows for a wider variation in flavor profile from one batch to the next, which is commendable when executed well. However, if not done properly, as some enthusiasts rightly worry, it could simply pave the way for younger, inferior bourbon to be included in a batch. Fortunately, Heaven Hill has demonstrated their competence in consistently producing high-quality Elijah Craig Barrel Proof bourbon. But with the removal of the age requirement, the future is uncertain. Batch A124 fully embraces a flavor profile that is almost universally appealing. It’s uncomplicated, featuring caramel, brown sugar, and cinnamon throughout, but also offers some complexity with notes of charred oak and stewed fruit on the nose, graham cracker and baking spices on the palate, and hints of leather and tobacco in the finish. Its 119 proof is on the lower side for the brand, but still relatively high. In the end, Batch A124 presents a classic barrel proof Kentucky bourbon flavor profile. While it may not achieve the same depth as its immediate predecessor, it’s a flavor profile that will satisfy anyone who enjoys a straightforward, high proof Kentucky bourbon.
